Strong growth for electric city bikes

After nearly a year and a half in operation, the use of electric city bikes in Buskerudbyen continues to rise. In 2022, 5,614 trips were made using Brakar’s city bikes. The service remains available throughout the winter, with bikes equipped with studded tires for a safe ride.

Electric city bikes: Strong growth in Kongsberg and Lier

Electric city bikes, operated by Brakar, were launched in Kongsberg and Lier in autumn 2021. Figures from 2022 show that Kongsberg is leading the way with 4,519 trips. The two most popular routes were Lier train station to Kjellstad Business Park, and Kongsberg Hub to the Town Hall/Krona.

– We are very pleased with the usage so far. We expected higher numbers in Kongsberg, as it is a more compact area than Lier, where hubs are further apart. However, we have seen a significant increase in Lier this autumn as well, says Kjersti Nordgård, Sales and Marketing Manager at Brakar.

Significant growth in Kongsberg

The electric city bike service in Kongsberg and Lier is funded through Buskerudbyen. September was the peak month in Kongsberg, with 786 trips – a 135 percent increase compared to September 2021.

In autumn 2022, several new bike locations were established in both Lier and Kongsberg, which has likely contributed to this growth.

Year-round cycling with studded tires

While rentals naturally decrease during the winter months, the service remains operational year-round. Half of the fleet is in winter storage, while the remaining bikes are equipped with studded tires.

– We believe it is important to offer this as a year-round service. With studded tires, it is safe to cycle even on snow, says Nordgård.

The bikes are also equipped with high-quality lights that turn on automatically when you start your ride, ensuring you can see and be seen in the winter darkness.

How to rent a bike

Bikes can be rented using the Brakar Billett app. If you already have a valid bus ticket, you will receive a discount on the rental price.
